Sunnyvale Furnace, AC and Heat Pump Repair

The short answer

BayPro Heating & Cooling serves Sunnyvale ZIPs 94085, 94086, 94087 and 94089, about 8 miles from our San Jose base. We fix and install furnaces, central AC, heat pumps and ductless mini-splits, plus maintenance, duct cleaning and air quality work.

From our shop in San Jose, Sunnyvale is an eight-mile drive northwest, and we spend a lot of time in its neighborhoods across 94085, 94086, 94087 and 94089. Much of the housing stock dates from the decades when the valley filled in quickly, so a typical Sunnyvale home has a forced-air furnace in a closet, attic or garage, ducts that have seen several owners and, increasingly, an air conditioner or heat pump that was added later. BayPro Heating & Cooling keeps those systems working. Instead of a general overview, this page is organized by the type of equipment you own, with the issues we see most on each one.

If you have a gas furnace

Furnaces in Sunnyvale rarely face real cold, but they do cycle on and off through a long, damp winter. Repeated starts wear out hot surface igniters, flame sensors and inducer motors. A furnace that clicks, lights briefly and shuts down is very often reporting a sensor or venting issue, and it is designed to stop for safety reasons.

If yours is aging, you can keep it as long as it runs safely. Air District rules do not apply to working furnaces, only to ones being replaced. Looking ahead, Rule 9-4 requires gas furnaces manufactured from 2029 to be zero-NOx, which practically means a heat pump will be the expected replacement after that point. We are happy to talk through the timing with you.

If you have central air conditioning

Sunnyvale is closer to the Bay than the southern end of the valley, so it misses some of the most intense heat, yet warm stretches still keep air conditioners busy. The faults we find most on Sunnyvale AC systems include:

  • Weak or failed run capacitors that keep the compressor or fan from starting
  • Outdoor coils packed with dust and debris, raising pressures and power use
  • Refrigerant leaks at older flare fittings or evaporator coils
  • Clogged condensate lines that trigger float switches and shut the system off
  • Thermostat wiring problems left behind after a smart thermostat install

If you have, or want, a heat pump

A heat pump replaces both a furnace and an air conditioner with one outdoor unit and an indoor air handler. The valley's Mediterranean climate, with dry summers and gentle winters, suits that kind of system well. Before installing one, we check whether your electrical panel has room for the load and whether the existing ducts can deliver the steady airflow a heat pump prefers.

Incentives have shifted recently. The federal 25C credit ended for heat pumps placed in service after December 31, 2025. BayREN and your local clean energy provider may still have electrification programs, but amounts and availability vary by funding cycle, so we confirm the current offer before putting it in a quote.

For existing heat pumps, common service calls involve defrost controls, reversing valves, low refrigerant and outdoor fan motors.

If one part of the house is the problem

Garage conversions, accessory dwelling units and additions are common across Sunnyvale, and they are often the hardest spaces to keep comfortable from the main system. A ductless mini-split gives that space its own heating and cooling, controlled separately, without stretching an already busy duct system.

Sometimes the fix is simpler. A disconnected duct in the attic, a crushed flex run or a return that is far too small can starve a room of air. We check those first so you are not buying equipment to solve a duct problem.

Keeping any system healthy

Whatever you own, an annual maintenance visit pays for itself in fewer surprises. We clean coils, test electrical parts, check refrigerant and gas pressures, clear drains and look over accessible ducts. Duct cleaning and filtration upgrades are available if dust or allergies are a concern. Our routes also cover Mountain View, Santa Clara, Los Altos, Cupertino and Los Altos Hills, so Sunnyvale appointments are easy to fit in.

What to expect

How a visit goes

  1. Test first

We check airflow, electrical parts, gas and refrigerant readings before naming a cause, so the fix matches the real problem.

  2. Plain-language options

You see what failed, why it matters and what each option involves, written down before any work starts.

  3. Straight talk on rules

Air District rules do not require replacing working equipment. We explain where they matter and confirm current incentives before mentioning them.

FAQ

Common questions

Which parts of Sunnyvale do you serve?

All four Sunnyvale ZIP codes: 94085, 94086, 94087 and 94089.

My furnace starts and then shuts off. Is it dangerous?

The shutoff is a safety feature. It usually points to a dirty flame sensor or a venting issue. Turn it off and have it checked.

Can I switch from a furnace and AC to a heat pump?

Usually, yes. We check your electrical panel and ductwork first to make sure the system will perform well.

What is the best option for heating and cooling a garage conversion?

A ductless mini-split is often the most practical choice, since it does not depend on the main duct system.

My AC stopped working after I installed a new thermostat. Can you help?

Yes. Wiring and configuration issues after thermostat swaps are common, and we can diagnose and correct them.

Do you offer duct cleaning in Sunnyvale?

Yes. We inspect the ducts first and recommend cleaning, sealing or repairs based on what we find.
